INTRODUCTION
This is the third of our newsletters as agreed at the AGM to keep you informed of various activities. Members can also use our Newsletter to pass on any information they would like to share and details for the next newsletter will need to reach me by 31st August
MEMBERSHIP
Our membership year started on 1st June and your subscriptions of £20 are now due. Adrian Blyth will be sending the formal reminders to you all in the next few days and we hope you will all renew for the 2024/2025 year
GALA SPORTS AWARDS EVENING
A further reminder that our major event of the year will be held on Wednesday 9th October at Haslemere Hall. The formal invite for nominations will be sent out by Adrian Blyth before the end of June so please start thinking about who you might wish to nominate for the regular awards. We really would like to see a bumper number of applications this year so make sure you and your organization don’t miss out. We will have the normal 12 awards – the one change is that we will not be making the School Initiative Award as we consider it to be too similar to the award for Sporting Impact in Schools which will continue. We are however offering up to 2 Bursaries of £250 each for Sports Officials and Coaches and details of the awards and how to apply were sent to you all a few weeks ago. Please do think about who in your organization might benefit and ensure they are aware of how to apply
CREATE A STAR
As a part of the Gala Sports Awards Evening we will be presenting up to 8 Create a Star Bursaries. Details were sent out in early May and already we have received 3 applications – 2 of which are from athletes who have not applied before. The closing date for receipt of applications is 31st July so please encourage suitable candidates to get their application forms completed. All applications will be considered by our panel of independent adjudicators consisting of Lawrie Baker from Active Surrey; Simon Crowther from Sport Godalming and Peter Jones of Sportslocker
One of our previous Bursary winners has recently been selected to represent Wales. Cerys McIntosh, a trampolining Gymnast, received Bursaries in 2017; 2018; 2019 and 2021 before moving away from the area. Cerys was originally with Swallows Trampolining Club before moving to the Edgbarrow Club. Cerys has told me that the Welsh squad has finally come back after the covid issues and she has been re-selected. She has recently attended trials for an international competition in Portugal and has been selected for the team. It will be her first senior international as well as the first time representing Wales. We all send our congratulations to Cerys and it demonstrates how we are supporting youngsters who eventually make it to the top.
